Champion of Champions – Fours – Day 1

This years Champion of Champion Fours, Day 1, was played today on our green and proved to be a great spectacle. Outside the club were lots and lots of cars and even a bus, while inside, the Mastergreen seemed to be surrounded by visitors, all to see how well their two club teams would do.
In each section, Male and Female, four teams received a first round bye, the other eight were drawn and got play started and 9.00am.

Our women’s team, Alice, Lodzia, Liz and Diana had to face the Paraparaumu Beach team in the first round and dropping a 5 on the first end was a bit of a shock. Then it was 2 – 8, but then things from our girls got underway and after end 9, were leading 13-8. Thirteen seemed to be a problem number and end 11 showed both teams on 13. From then on it seemed that our girls mainly kept in control and winning 18th end with a four, won the game 23-16.   Wow!!!!

Lunch and then into the next game against Waikanae who had won their previous game against Paekakariki.
Another close game and after 10 ends, the score was at 7 all. By the 15th end, Waikanae were in the lead 15-9 and things were beginning to look desperate for our team, but then twos seemed to be our girls favourite number, three of them making the score at the end of the game, 15 all. Sounds easy but it needed Alice to deliver her last bowl to get the 2nd shot to get a draw.
A coin was tossed, Waikanae won, and their lead delivered the Jack. Real pressure from then on, but it was close bowls from our players, including two great deliveries from Lodzia, which changed the head and so another two points had won the match for our players. Wonderful.
So it had been a great day for all, each member of the team playing so well, and we who watched them play, so pleased with their efforts.

Also I must say that it impressed me the way the two teams got together after the game, smiles, chatting etc., a real sporting way to end a game.
So tomorrow now is the next challenge, 9.00am and another team to play.

Tomorrows winning shot — Perhaps

Our men’s team had a bye for the first round and faced Paraparaumu Beach who also had had a bye.  Things didn’t quite work out so well for our players; let’s see how they get on next year in our club’s championship.
