Wednesday again, fine but cool, and then it was off into today’s gala. A full green and obvious enjoyment of the game could be seen and heard throughout the day.
We see often the same players and teams and often another face or two appears; Bill, ex Waitarere Beach and then Central player and in contrast, a player from our Business House Bowls joined in. Great to see him taking part (thanks to Rob) and he was able to experience how we run such competitions.
Two teams today won their three games and next nearest was the team with two wins and a draw.
In first place, Brenda and Trevor Fellows and Tom Hamer won their games with fifteen ends. Coming in second, also with three wins, were Reg and Judy Fowles and Hillary (not sure if this is right) Davidson with 12 ends. Placed third was Rex Spicer and his team-mates, Jim Bagnall and Bill Moran.
And What else. Well it came to mind while watching TV tonight and not really concentrating on the programme, how a club gets to run a gala such as was held today, with so many people helping in one way or another.
i saw Ken before play but noticed later, that he wasn’t actually playing today. I guess he was there to see about the updating of the clubrooms. Two emails later today was a reminder to all on how much help some members have been giving over recent times with the painting etc in the clubrooms and what is still to take place. So many of us don’t know who have been the helpers and it was good to read about them in Ken’s mailing. Thanks Ken.
Our galas are also well planned and have helpers, some of whom are new this season and are helping to make the day a success. What reminded me of this was how at the end of the afternoon, there was Heidi in the kitchen, getting the cleaning-up under way. I don’t know if this was her ‘official’ task, but. it was a good reminder on how so many help run the day, some obviously and others in the background but still important. When players arrive before play starts, many get a cup of tea/coffee (who got that organized I wonder), while at the same time, scoreboards, mats etc are set out for the day’s play. And of course, all teams have to register and so Match Committee members help out, taking the money, doing the draw, ensuring that the first games would start at 11.00am.
Did you take a ticket in the raffle?? We all have noticed that Coral who for so many years has organised this, now has taken a rest and Julie has stepped in and is in charge.
So the day goes on, club helpers and members doing their bit to help run the day officially or otherwise.
When I was leaving later in the day, I glanced back towards the club and saw Trevor Turnbull spraying the cotula green – nothing to do with today’s games but still preparing a green for future play.
To all who came to the club today, whether to officially take part or maybe just to carry my bowling bag over to the clubrooms when it looked as though it might rain, THANKS, we look forward to seeing you next week.
