The competition for this event started early this month but waited until today to get it completed.
Some wonderful games were played throughout the day, watched by interested members and the final wasn’t completed until 5.55pm
The cotula green was in great condition and the players appreciated the work that had been done to bring it up to such a high standard.
One never new who would win the competition; so many games were so closely won and we were never sure who we, the watchers, thought would take the games. e.g.. Jim Bagnall and Shoota’s early game was close, 19-21, Brian Coe’s score just beat Dianne Short, 21-18, and Mary Judd won her game against Bronwyn McMahon 21-17.
The first semi final was played between Brian Coe and Mary Judd and after five ends the score was level at 4 all. By the 12th end, Mary had gone on to lead by 16-7. From that point, Brian got going and the pair were finally together, the score, 19 all. Two points on what proved to be the last end saw Mary take the game 21-19.
Shoota and Omeka’s match saw Shoota lead the way for much of the game, never too far ahead of his opponent but aware that he was always a threat. The 16th end showed Shoota on 16 and Omeka behind on 9 but the scoreboard then showed that by the 21st end, the two players were both on 19. A further single took Shoota to 20 but Omeka responded by getting two points on the next end to win the match.
It was now time to see the finalist perform, Omeka Feaunati v’s Mary Judd. Another close game and some really great shots played. Though Omeka finally took out the match, it took him 13 ends to Mary’s 11 to take out the game. It was a fitting game to watch as a final of the event.
It was a day of real interest for those watching to see how the games were being played and the skills we were shown. Lots of applause throughout the day from those watching.
As usual, one must congratulate all the players for their efforts and also our thanks go to those who helped run the event.
