The Haggis Gala

What has become an annual event for the club, the Haggis Gala, was held yesterday and again proved to be a wonderful event.

Players arriving in the morning were welcomed with a ‘wee dram’, the draw was made and then it was out into the brilliant sunshine to start play. There was a slight hiccup, ( a team that had been entered failed to turn up) so a bye had to be included in the draw. As it happened, my team had the non arrivals as our first game, but organiser, Margaret Griffin, was able to get some of our women members to fill in so the teams effected at least had a game.

An excellent lunch was provided by the club and was organised by a very efficient team, Margaret Lowndes, Alice Spicer and Christine Gardner and ‘went down’ well with all players.

A really hot afternoon greeted us for the two afternoon games and then it was time to cool off in the club rooms.

The sound of pipes reminded us that this was a Scottish occasion and in came piper Donald Walters followed by Margaret Griffin carrying the Haggis, followed by two helpers, Jim Wishart and Fred Adams.

This was followed by John McAllister giving us the ‘Address to the Haggis’ followed by the Toast.

It was then time to sample the Haggis -some loved it, some thought otherwise, and there were those who were just not brave enough to sample what was offered!!

Margaret then thanked all who had helped make the day so successful with special thanks to our sponsor of the day, Mark & Debbie Winiata.
