It was to start this morning at 10.00am, but overnight and early morning rain put the semi-final start on to early afternoon.
Lodzia Wnek faced Margaret MacKay in one game and by the 12th end, was leading 13-9. Margaret gained two 3’s and a 4 and once in the lead, went on to win the game 21-15.
The other semi-final was between Alice Spicer and Dianne Short. In the early ends, the two players kept close to each other and by the 12th end, Dianne was leading 12-9 but from then on, Alice did most of the scoring. Dianne came back with a 3, 1 and a 4 to be leading 20 -19 and a single by Alice on the next end put the score level at 20-20.
The pressure was on both players and Alice started what would be the final end by putting her first bowl very close to the Jack. Dianne did her best to get closer but it was Alice who managed to put all her four bowls in the count. The final bowl from Dianne, a drive, just missed leaving Alice Spicer the winner.
2011 Women’s Open Singles finalists.
Margaret MacKay and Alice Spicer.
Came the final between Alice and Margaret, two players who have played a lot together and knew each others playing style.
The early ends kept the score close; by the 9th there was only 1 point between the players with Alice in front 8-7.
From that point on, she did most of the scoring, mostly 1’s and 2’s, and finally won the game 21-10.
Congratulations go to both Alice and Margaret and especially to Alice, for her first Open Women’s Championship Singles win.
