Once again, Margaret Griffin sponsored a gala in memory of her parents, Selby and Jean Hammond.
There will not be too many club members who were with us when they were active bowlers of the club but they can be seen in photos, one in the lounge near the bar and the other in the Women’s Lounge.

Selby Hammond
Selby joined the club in 1966 and was with us through to his passing in 2005. During those years he was very active both on and off the green, serving in many positions – committee and social committee, Centre Delegate, Umpire, Bar Manager, President in 1975-76 and was made a life Member in 1988 and Patron in 1992.
His wife Jean joined us in 1979 when the Levin West Women’s section became part of the club, and in 1979, she also became Club Patron.

Jean Hammond
I have many memories of Selby and Jean and was sorry that yesterday I was not able to play in the gala. I spoke to Margaret this morning and she told me she had had a happy day.
So must have the players, a fine day and enough teams to play on both greens, 7 rinks on the cotula and 6 on the Dales green. A late withdrawal meant a pair had to be found and though not ‘mixed’, it was good that two women club members were able to fill in – seems they were rewarded by getting third place on their green.
The Days results as follows:
Green 1
1st – David and Ra Walker – 4 wins, 27 ends, 56 points
2nd – Rex and Alice Spicer – 3 wins, 30 ends, 49 points
3rd – Tony Blaney and ‘Woodie’ – 3 wins, 29 ends and 58 points
Green 2
1st – Margaret MacKay and Rex Holmes 3 wins, 30 ends, 61 points
2nd – Dianne Short and Omeka – 3 wins, 29 ends, 69 points
3rd – Joan Hayward and Jan Dawson – 3 wins, 27 ends and 54 points.
A Consolation draw was made from the remaining teams and this saw Shoota and Marie receive this special prize.
