Women’s Championship Singles

The Women’s Singles Championships got under way this morning, the challenge being to play three matches and to win at least two of them.
This is no easy matter and after the first two rounds, Hildi was the only player who had won both of her games.  Her first was against Ra, who often represents the club in singles, and her next was against Susan, another good player.
The third round thus became a very serious matter for most of the players and ended with a further five with the necessary win to qualify them for post-section play.
Joan needed to win her final game and was drawn to play Hildi. What a match this proved to be.  Joan led 11-4 by the 10th end, 13-6 on the 14th, 14-8 on the 16th and then her scoring came to a stop for the next 8 ends.
By the 25th end, the score was level at 17 all, tension really building up. and then it was 20 all and a winner was about to be found.
With both players with only one bowl left to play and Joan holding the winning shot, Hildi sent off her bowl and took the shot. Last chance for Joan. She sent her final bowl on its way, but it just drew up short and Hildi had taken the win .. and Joan had not qualified.
A really exciting game and now the draw was able to be made for the post section.  This was done and Margaret MacKay was drawn to play Ra Walker and back in action, Hildi, to play Alice. With a bye into the next round were Dianne and Hazel.
Margaret  won her game against Ra, 22-11 and Hildi, retaining her form, won her game agains Alice 21-18.
It has been a most interesting day and tomorrow, the semifinal round will start at 10.00am with Dianne Short playing Hazel Rose and Hildi  playing Margaret MacKay.
Good bowling, ladies.
