Usually this is a two day event, but yesterday, the weather at Waikanae Beach was too bad to play so it was necessary to play four rounds today. As it turned out, the weather was really good; in fact after lunch it was really hot.
Each club sent a team of 9 players for Pairs, Triples and Fours.
This morning, the Pairs and Fours played on the top green and the triples were on the new green by the clubrooms. In the afternoon, teams changed their green from the morning’s play; another challenge for teams.
Our club was last years winners so we were doing our best to retain the trophy and our teams performed as follows:
Pairs: Ken and Ra lost to Paraparaumu in game one, had a draw in the next game against Waikanae, and in the afternoon had wins against Central and Otaki. (1 loss, 1 draw, 2 wins)
Triples: Neville, Dianne and Alice lost their first game against Kapiti, then won against Waikanae. The afternoon games ended with a win against Otaki and a loss against Central. (2 wins, losses)
Fours: Ian, Paul, Susan and Margaret played on the top green in the morning and won both their games against Waitarere Beach and Paraparaumu Beach. We found it difficult in our first afternoon game playing on rink 8 on the bottom green; this had not been used in the morning and we were outplayed by the Kapiti Four.
Our last game saw us come back to life, winning our game against the local Waikanae Beach team 25-3. (3 wins, 1 loss)
At the end of play, afternoon tea was served and then the results of the day were announced:
Pairs: 1st Kapiti, 2nd Paraparaumu Beach
Triples: 1st WaikanaeBeach Red, 2nd Paraparaumu Beach
Fours: 1st Kapiti, 2nd Waikanae
Overall Winner of the trophy: Kapiti
2nd Levin (1 win less than Kapiti)
It had been a most enjoyable day of bowls and we thank Waikanae Beach for the use of their greens and clubrooms and for the work they did in running the annual event.
Susan has played her last bowl in our game against the local team
