A Competitive Weekend

The last of this year’s Champion of Champion events, Men’s and Women’s Pairs,  was played over the weekend on the Kapiti Bowling Club’s green.
Our Men’s team, Rob Cotter(s) and Jim Bagnall played the Paraparaumu pair, lost their game 7 – 21; that combination went on to complete the event today as the Champion of Champion pair.
Our  women pair, Audrey Sciascia and Bronwyn McMahon, won their early games, but were finally beaten today in the semi final by the Paraparaumu pair.  A pleasing result for the Paraparaumu Club. Congratulations.
I had a busy weekend with Keith West, Jimmy Adams and Fred Adams (s) playing in the two day ANZAC Tournament run by the Waikanae Club.
Both greens were used with teams from many clubs in the local Centre and others from the Wanganui and Wellington areas.
On Saturday, four games were played by each team and from the results, the top teams played on Green 1 and others on Green2.  We managed two wins on Saturday and this did result in us playing on Green 1.  We were in the Plate Section and won our first three games, but our final game saw us really struggle.
In the end we received 2nd place in the section but the really great moment for us was when we played the last end in our final game.
We had no way of winning this match but we will remember greatly, watching Fred, our Skip, play his last two bowls.
The Jack was already in the ditch and we were down on the head. Fred with his first bowl, drew close to the ditch to hold the shot but the opposing skip drove and easily knocked Fred’s bowl into the ditch.
One last bowl… again Fred delivered his bowl and this time it drew even closer to the edge of the ditch and there it stayed. Two really really great shots. In no way did it give us a win in this last game, we were so far behind on the board, but it demonstrated to us how well he had played over the two day. Great work Fred.
It was a well run tournament, and as well, lunch provided each day for all the players. The weather wasn’t the best, but congratulations go to the hosting club, Waikanae, for their planning and work over the weekend.  Many thanks from all.
