Late Summer weather was evident for the start of the Mixed Singles Championship played today on Green 2.
Round 1 got underway with the following games played:
Shoota won his game against Ra Walker, 23-18. Joe Wnek went down to Alice Spicer 12-21, Ken Hayward won his game against Lodzia Wnek 21-3, Neville Turnbull went down to Murray Griffin 12-21 and Dave Walker proved too strong against Vern Murphy, 21-4.
Round 2 saw Neville have a close game against Alice, winning 21-19, Ken went down 15-21 to Ra, Dave had a good win, this time against Murray, 21-9, the Wneks, game was a family affair and Joe just got ahead of Lodzia 21-18 and the final game saw Shoota win against Vern 21-11.
By now, already qualified were Ra and Dave Walker and Shoota Ballinger so the next round was the last chance for some of the others.
Round 3, and Joe didn’t make it against RA, going down 22-6. Ken had to win against Vern and did so, 21-9. Vern had his moments in this game and he told me later that he learnt the importance of the length of an end. He was having a strong few ends in the middle of the game but when Ken won back the Jack, he changed the length of the next end and that put paid to Vern’s comeback.
Even though the score doesn’t look too good, Lodzia played well in her game against Neville but went down 21-9. It was a good tight game between Murray and Shoota, each having their time in the lead. After 18 ends, the score was level at 13 all but from there, Shoota kept in front and won the game 21-16.
Alice needed to win her game against Dave and the first two ends went his way but for the next 10, Alice took the lead and stayed there; 13th end and the scoreboard read 15-4 to Alice. From there on it was a real battle, very good bowls on the head and bit by bit, Dave worked his way back into the game. The 23rd end came and went, the score read 17-16 to Alice. The next two ends saw Alice reach 20-16, just one more point needed. It was quite exciting for the onlookers watching the game, both were playing so well. Alice drew what could be the winning shot but Dave had one left bowl. On its way, not a drive, just a controlled draw. It arrived and pushed Alice’s bowl back to give him 2 shots. The score now, 19-20
Surely the next end would be the vital one and it certainly was. A long end, Dave’s bowls a bit short and Alice’s a bit long. Unfortunately for Alice, just a bit too long and the game had gone to Dave with tow shots.
Thanks to both players for playing such a great game.
The Draw for the post section to be played tomorrow (weather permitting) is:
Round 1 – Ra Walker v’s Ken Hayward.
Round 2 – Neville Turnbull v’s Shoot Ballinger and Dave Walker will play the winner of Round 1.
Should be an interesting day.
